Hints for Saving Quality Digital Images You can easily upload quality digital images, every time, if you follow these steps:
- Most digital cameras have an option to save at different resolutions. You want to set your camera to save pictures using the highest resolution possible.
- If your camera supports saving to .tif format, choose this option over .jpg.
- If your camera only supports saving to .jpg, DO NOT EDIT your picture. Stop right there and upload your image as-is. Indicate to our support staff what you would like to change with your image in the Printpop.com New Art Wizard, if you need to change anything.
- If you took your picture as a .tif, open it in your favorite photo editor. If you do not own a photo editor, do an internet search for "The Gimp" -- it is a popular photo editor with an extensive help menu (and it's FREE!).
- Do any editing you feel comfortable doing to your image, and save the image as a high-quality jpg. Most editors will prompt for this information during the saving process. Do not edit your image after you have saved it as a jpg. We recommend you keep a local copy of your original .tif if you wish to do further editing
- Upload your image to Printpop.com using the New Art Wizard. We only accept .jpg format.
Explanation
(.jpg) is a lossy image format. Every time you edit a .jpg and save it, a loss of quality will occur. Saving a .jpg even two or three times will result in major "noise" appearing in your image. This is the trade-off for being able to save an image that takes much, much less disk space than the original .tif file.
Our equipment can handle only very minor lossiness of .jpg files. If you see visible noise in the image when viewing it at 100% in your photo editor/viewer, that noise will print on paper. If your camera only saves in .jpg format, simply upload the best shot you can take and we will do further editing. This ensures your images will always be of highest quality. If we feel the .jpg quality is too low for us to sell prints from, your upload will be rejected by our technicians.
Remember:
- Take digital pictures as high-resolution .tif
- Edit originals saving as .tif
- Upload final edit as .jpg
